Introduction
I am Tia, and I a dedicated advocate for social justice, specifically focusing on addressing hate crimes and discrimination. I have a background in Politics, International Law and International Relations which has allowed me to look more deeply into the systemic issues of inequality and hate crime.
Personally, I have always enjoyed sports, having spent years competing in equestrian sports and more recently playing football.
Currently, my role consists of managing a small team of caseworkers to support victims of hate crime whilst also working on strategic initiatives to provide more support to victims. This included working alongside other sports charities to shed more light on how hate and discrimination impacts participating in sports.
Importance of Health and Activity
Health and physical activity are fundamental to overall well-being, not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well. For everyone, but especially for women and girls, engaging in sports can build confidence, resilience and a sense of community.
Personally, taking up football later in life has been transformative. It has not only improved my physical fitness but also strengthened my mental health, providing a positive outlet for stress and a sense of belonging in a team environment.
Importance of Opportunities for Women and Girls
Advancing gender equality and addressing social issues – equal opportunities for women and girls in sport can be a powerful platform to address broader social issues like gender based violence, discrimination and access to education.
Female athletes serve as role models, inspiring the next generation – visibility of women in sports can broaden aspirations.
It is crucial women and girls have equal opportunities in sports, as these opportunities empower them to develop skills, build self-esteem and challenge societal norms. Unfortunately women and girls face numerous barriers, such as limited access to facilities, lack of role models and cultural expectations.

The Role of Community and Support
Community and support is a vital element in encouraging physical activity and well being. They create an environment where everyone feels welcome, safe and motivated to participate.
Practical Tips and Advice
My advice would be to find an activity that excites you and start small. Whether it is joining a local walking group, trying a fitness class or kicking a ball around, just try to find joy in movement. – I also stress that it is never too late to try something new.
Final Comments
In terms of future goals for support in Bristol we would like to provide better and safer reporting channels when hate crime or discrimination happens. We currently take referrals for all hate crimes and protected characteristics. We know that this sort of discrimination happens in sport so we need to make the support more accessible.
We would also like to engage with more teams and clubs to help educate on hate crime and discrimination and increase support for victims. I think just by getting involved either by volunteering or supporting a local women’s club or team. Just being encouraging of women and girls to participate.
